Starting to take shape

Our yard has been a terrible mess!  Here you can see when all we had was lots of mud!  It was terrible!  We had stepping stones but they didn’t really help.  We were having to wear rain boots to get up to our driveway.  Then finally we had our walkway finished at the end of this winter.  You can see how it turned out here.  Now while we are waiting on this baby to arrive we have been doing lots of work in the yard.  We can finally sit outside and really enjoy it.  There are still so many plants I would like to plant but we are just getting a little start.  Everything is starting to green up really well.  We are getting some grass to grow successfully and added a few plants here and there.

yardWe planted a flowering burgundy cherry tree, a honeysuckle, 2 blue hydrangeas, and some veggies and herbs.  We also put in the solar lights to help light up the walkway.  I can’t wait till we get the lattice up around the bottom of the deck.  That will help give the area a cleaner more finished look.  But for now I think it is looking far better than it was months ago!  By the time Piper can crawl around outside we should have some thick grass for her!

Some Big Changes

We have been getting lots done and I at the request of some here are some picture updates.

We now have a walkway which is a big deal!  No more walking through the mud.  I can’t wait until this summer when we can landscape around it and help it look better!

The back side of house.  The upstairs is my in-laws home our front door is hiding behind the deck area.  We are going to put up lattice to close in the under neath of the deck.  I will get some plants around it to help soften the look of all of it too.

walkway2From our door.  We are going to plant grass again now that it is waring up.  This part of the walkway will also have some different stones on the gravel, that is just a foundation.  The big area under the deck will be closed in and I think I will grow a climbing plant on it.

walkway3Walking up the walkway isn’t bad at all.  There are only a total of 14 or so steps.

walkway4There will also be a railing on the left side all the way around it.

It is working out really well.

I have had it up to here with weeds!

This is the empty lot next door to us.  From this distance it almost looks peaceful and pretty.  We need to take a closer look!

Here we are where our yard meets the empty lot.  The lot will probably remain empty because it is a big hole.  It would be hard for anyone to ever build a house here.  That has its pros and cons…trust me.  The owner of the subdivision is supposed to keep all empty lots mowed.  He has yet to mow this so far this year.  So the wind is blowing all of the weeds seeds right into our yard.  It has been a nightmare and I need help.  Just so we really know what we are dealing with lets look even closer!

This one is about as tall as I am.  I would love to know what I could use as a natural weed killer in my flower beds.  I have been using Roundup but I have to use so much of it.  I really don’t like using chemicals like that but I have never heard of any natural remides that work and won’t hurt my flowers.  Not to mention the cost of buying the Roundup!  So if anyone has any thoughts on this, please don’t hold back!

Here is an example of how thick they are growing in my plants.  I can only pull so many before I will be right back in bed with a hurting back.  The weed I am fighting the most is Johnson Grass.  I never delt with this in Ohio.  Some of this country living is still so new to me.  Between this and the clay here I might pull my hair out!

Recycled Bench

Blake had this old work bench that we were going to get rid of.  It was really old and really well made but one of the legs was broken off.  He was just going to burn it to get it out of our way but I really wanted to salvage it.  It was so pretty with its dove tail joints and hard wood.

That was when I got the great idea to cut it in half and put new legs on it.  A little purple stain and now I have the cutest potting bench to go in my potting shed!

My first project is growing fresh herbs from seeds!  I will really enjoy having them to cook with!

I was really excited to be able to recycle the table.  Blake got this from his uncle who got it from a friend who’s father built it about 100 years ago.  The poor guy; I bet he never thought it would get stained purple when hewas building it.

Let it Rain

This week we bought a rain barrel.  It was really easy to install.  We actually put it in last night in the dark.  We got it at WalMart for a good price.  I have wanted to get one to help with watering the plants.  Collecting the rain water and using it on the plants will help cut down water cost very much.  Here is the one we got.

They are very nice and clean looking, however ours is hidden inside my new garden shed.  When I get it all finished I will post pictures.
